Magnesium chloride is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula MgCl2 and a molecular weight of 95.211. It appears as colorless flaky crystals, is slightly soluble in acetone, and soluble in water, ethanol, methanol, and pyridine. It deliquesces and fumes in moist air and sublimes when heated to white heat in a hydrogen gas stream. Magnesium chloride is mainly found in the salt lakes of Qaidam Basin in China. The Golmud Chaerhan Salt Lake National Mining Park in Qinghai is the largest natural salt lake and the largest soluble potash-magnesium salt deposit in China, as well as a world-class natural laboratory for studying the formation of potash-magnesium salt deposits. The magnesium chloride reserves amount to 1.65 billion tons.
Preparation Methods
1. It is obtained from brine, a by-product of salt production from seawater, by concentrating into a carnallite (KCl·MgCl2·6H2O) solution. After cooling, potassium chloride is removed, then the solution is further concentrated, filtered, cooled, and crystallized. It can also be obtained by dissolving magnesium oxide or magnesium carbonate in hydrochloric acid and performing a replacement reaction. Anhydrous magnesium chloride is obtained by heating ammonium magnesium chloride to remove ammonia.
2. Anhydrous magnesium chloride can be prepared by dehydrating a mixture of ammonium chloride and hexahydrate magnesium chloride, or a double salt of ammonium chloride and hexahydrate magnesium chloride, in a hydrogen chloride gas stream.
