1. An important inorganic raw material in the chemical industry, used to produce magnesium carbonate, magnesium hydroxide, magnesium oxide, and other magnesium products, as well as raw materials for antifreeze agents.
2. Used in the metallurgical industry to produce metallic magnesium (obtained through molten electrolysis), liquid chlorine, and high-purity magnesium sand.
3. In the building materials industry, it is an important raw material for producing lightweight building materials such as fiberglass tiles, decorative panels, sanitary ware, ceilings, floor tiles, magnesium oxychloride cement, ventilation ducts, anti-theft manhole covers, fireproof doors and windows, fireproof boards, partition boards, and artificial marble for high-rise buildings. In magnesium products, it can be used to make high-quality magnesium tiles, high-quality fireproof boards, magnesium packaging boxes, magnesium decorative panels, lightweight wall panels, molds, stoves, and solid ignition agents for fireworks.
4. In other fields, it can be used as a food additive, protein coagulant, deicing agent, refrigerant, dust suppressant, refractory material, etc. Tofu made with brine (magnesium chloride aqueous solution) is more tender and flavorful than tofu made with gypsum.
5. Metallurgical industry: used as a binder for manufacturing refractory materials and furnace lining arms, and as a raw material for producing No. 2 flux and smelting metallic magnesium.
6. Mechanical industry: in daily life, bitter magnesia can be used to make mechanical packaging boxes, triangular pads, furniture, etc., making it a good material for "replacing materials with earth."
7. Transportation industry: used as a road deicing and snow melting agent, with fast melting speed and low corrosiveness to vehicles, more effective than sodium chloride.
8. Medicine: magnesium chloride is used to make "halogen dry" which can be used medicinally. It can also be used as a laxative.
9. Agriculture: can be used to make magnesium fertilizers, potassium magnesium fertilizers, and cotton defoliants.
10. Curing agent; nutritional fortifier; flavor enhancer (used with magnesium sulfate, salt, calcium hydrogen phosphate, calcium sulfate, etc.); fermentation aid for Japanese sake; water remover (used in fish cakes, dosage 0.05%–0.1%); texture improver (used with polyphosphates as an elasticity enhancer for surimi products). Due to its strong bitterness, the usual dosage is less than 0.1%.
